Japan Photo Journey — An Introduction
Discovering Japan: A Journey Through Contrast and Culture
Japan had always been on my travel bucket list — a country where ancient tradition meets futuristic design, where quiet temples stand beside vibrant cityscapes. From the moment our Emirates flight touched down in Osaka, I knew this journey would be as visually inspiring as it was culturally enriching.

Over more than two weeks, we travelled from the bright lights of Osaka to the timeless streets of Kyoto, the mountain trails of Tsumago, the coastal calm of Shimoda, the scenic landscapes of Hakone, and finally, the buzzing heart of Tokyo. Each destination offered a completely different palette — perfect for a travel photographer seeking stories told through light, texture, and atmosphere.
Planning the Route
Our journey began on September 25th and ended on October 10th, with flights from Düsseldorf via Dubai to Japan. We moved mostly by train — the Shinkansen and local lines make travel between cities easy and efficient. Each stop had its own rhythm: the food, the people, and even the way the light fell seemed to change from place to place.
For anyone planning a similar route, here’s the itinerary we followed:
Tokyo — Neon skylines, creative districts, and cultural contrasts
Osaka — Urban energy, street food, and modern architecture
Kyoto — Temples, bamboo forests, and timeless Japan
Tsumago/Nakatsugawa — Historic post towns on the Nakasendo Trail
Shimoda — Coastal escape for surfers and photographers
Hakone — Mountain views, onsen culture, and Lake Ashi
Through the Lens
As a photographer, Japan is a dream. The country offers endless variety — from reflections in neon-lit puddles in Dotonbori to the soft morning light filtering through Arashiyama’s bamboo forest. Every corner reveals a new frame worth capturing.
Whether you’re shooting with a DSLR or a smartphone, Japan challenges you to slow down and notice details: the geometry of a torii gate, the colors of a fish market, or the perfect symmetry of a temple garden.
